Local SCORE Program Helps Kickstart New Businesses Amid Pandemic

Disabled veteran Lacy Spurgeon never thought she would own her own business, but with help from SCORE, she launched Freedom Bound Quilt Shop in Toledo, a business dedicated to helping veterans like herself who suffer from PTSD. “Everything’s free for veterans, their spouses and their caregivers here,” Spurgeon explains. The business hosts classes, offers shelf space for patrons to sell handmade wares and markets quilting materials.

The quilt shop was a dream made possible in part by the guidance of Judy Becker, a retired businesswoman and mentor through Northwest Ohio’s SCORE chapter. Business is booming at the chapter and SCORE offices nationwide as entrepreneurs seek guidance to start new businesses in the wake of the pandemic.
